<p>We report bird fossils from the early Late Miocene (earliest Tortonian) of the Hammerschmiede clay pit in southern Germany. The material includes a stem group representative of the <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family" reg="Phalacrocoracidae">Phalacrocoracidae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, which is described as <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Bavaricarbo">Bavaricarbo</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="brevirostris">brevirostris</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>gen. et sp. nov. as well as another, unnamed and much smaller cormorant species the size of extant <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Microcarbo">Microcarbo</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> species. Furthermore, we identified new material of the darter <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Anhinga">Anhinga</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="pannonica">pannonica</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> (<tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family" reg="Anhingidae">Anhingidae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>), including the first (partial) tarsometatarsus of the species, and a fragmentary humerus belonging to an undetermined species of the <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="order" reg="Gaviiformes">Gaviiformes</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>. A partial tarsometatarsus of an unusual accipitriform bird is described as <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Mioaetus">Mioaetus</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="pforzenensis">pforzenensis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>gen. et sp. nov. A humerus represents one of the earliest records of the apodiform <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="suborder" reg="Apodi">Apodi</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> and is tentatively assigned to <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Apus">Apus</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="gaillardi">gaillardi</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>. The avifauna from the Hammerschmiede clay pit stems from a time interval of the Miocene that yielded comparatively few avian remains in Europe, and the site continues to produce taxa that have not yet been reported from other Miocene localities. The coexistence of at least two cormorant species, a darter, and a gaviiform testifies to the high productivity of the river system that existed at the site, which must have provided ample prey for piscivorous birds.</p>

      <title>Introduction</title>
<p>Europe has a rich early Miocene fossil record of birds, but avifaunas from later intervals of the Miocene are much less known (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B45">Mlíkovský 2002</xref>). Against this background, it is significant that ongoing excavations in the Hammerschmiede clay pit near Pforzen, in the Allgäu region of Bavaria (Germany), yielded significant numbers of avian remains from the early Late Miocene (earliest Tortonian, <abbrev xlink:title="European Mammal Neogene">MN</abbrev> 8; see <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B36">Lechner and Böhme 2025</xref> for detailed data on the location and stratigraphy of the site). The locality is renowned for its rich and diverse faunal assemblage, including bivalves and gastropods (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B49">Schneider and Prieto 2011</xref>), as well as fishes, amphibians, reptiles, and a wide range of small and large mammals (e.g., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B10">Fuss et al. 2015</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B30">Kirscher et al. 2016</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B16">Hartung et al. 2020</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B21">Kargopoulos et al. 2021a</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B22">2021b</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B23">2021c</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B14">Hartung and Böhme 2022</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B15">2026</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B24">Kargopoulos et al. 2022</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B34">Lechner and Böhme 2022</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B35">2023</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B31">Konidaris et al. 2023</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B20">Kampouridis et al. 2024</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B25">Kargopoulos et al. 2024</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B26">2025</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">Böhme and Prieto 2025</xref>). It has furthermore gained particular prominence through the discovery of associated skeletons of the hominids <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Danuvius">Danuvius</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="guggenmosi">guggenmosi</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> Böhme et al., 2019 and <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Buronius">Buronius</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="manfredschmidi">manfredschmidi</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> Böhme et al., 2024 (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B5">Böhme et al. 2019</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B6">2020</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B7">2024</xref>). The fossiliferous sediments of this site were deposited in fluvial meandering channels, and avian fossils come from the regional stratigraphic levels HAM 4, dated to 11.58 million years ago [<abbrev xlink:title="million years ago">Ma</abbrev>], and HAM 5, dated to 11.62 <abbrev xlink:title="million years ago">Ma</abbrev> (age model of <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B30">Kirscher et al. 2016</xref>, updated by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B36">Lechner and Böhme 2025</xref>).</p>
<p>Bird fossils from the time interval represented by the Hammerschmiede clay pit are known from the Middle Miocene (<abbrev xlink:title="European Mammal Neogene">MN</abbrev> 7) of the Steinheim Basin in Germany (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B17">Heizmann and Hesse 1995</xref>), and coeval records (<abbrev xlink:title="European Mammal Neogene">MN</abbrev> 7–8) also exist from the French site La Grive-Saint-Alban (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B1">Ballmann 1976</xref>). However, most other sites assigned to the European Mammal Neogene (<abbrev xlink:title="European Mammal Neogene">MN</abbrev>) zones 7–9 yielded only fragmentary bird remains, the exact identities of which are not always easy to determine (e.g., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B12">Grigorescu and Kessler 1977</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">1988</xref>).</p>
<p>Avian fossils from the Hammerschmiede clay pit represent about 3.6% (HAM 4) and 1.6% (HAM 5), respectively, of all catalogued remains. Previously reported birds include the darter <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Anhinga">Anhinga</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="pannonica">pannonica</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> (Lambrecht, 1916) (<tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family" reg="Anhingidae">Anhingidae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B42">Mayr et al. 2020a</xref>), a large crane (<tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family" reg="Gruidae">Gruidae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B43">Mayr et al. 2020b</xref>), and some anseriform species including the distinctive <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Allgoviachen">Allgoviachen</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="tortonica">tortonica</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B44">Mayr et al. 2023</xref>). <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B42">Mayr et al. (2020a)</xref> listed further avian taxa, which so far remain unpublished (see also <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B36">Lechner and Böhme 2025</xref>), and in the present study some of these, as well as newly discovered specimens, are described, including a new genus and species of the <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family" reg="Phalacrocoracidae">Phalacrocoracidae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, as well as a new genus and species of an unusual accipitriform bird, and one of the earliest records of an <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Apus">Apus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>-like apodiform bird.</p>

The trochlea metatarsi III is damaged and its medial rim is broken, but the trochlea appears to have been mediolaterally unusually narrow. The trochlea metatarsi IV is proportionally larger and wider than in other accipitriforms. The shaft has a subtriangular cross section. The fossa metatarsi I is situated far proximally (much more so than in strigiforms).</p>

It is, furthermore, identified as a representative of the <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family" reg="Phalacrocoracidae">Phalacrocoracidae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, rather than a small darter, by the hooked tip of the rostrum and the well-developed crus dorsale fossae of the humerus.</p>
<p>It was first noted by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B37">Mayr (2007)</xref> that some Cenozoic taxa that were identified as cormorants are more likely to be stem group representatives of the clade (<tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family" reg="Anhingidae">Anhingidae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> + <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family" reg="Phalacrocoracidae">Phalacrocoracidae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>). <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Bavaricarbo">Bavaricarbo</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> and other stem group <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family" reg="Phalacrocoracidae">Phalacrocoracidae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> differ from extant cormorants in a shorter and more convex crista bicipitalis of the humerus (Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F4">4M–P</xref>) and a more laterally situated linea intermuscularis on the sternal extremity of the coracoid (Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F4">4H–K</xref>). Based on the different position of the linea intermuscularis, Lambrecht (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B33">1933</xref>: 298) hypothesized that cormorants underwent changes in the pectoral girdle musculature in the course of their evolution. He hypothesized that musculus supracoracoideus — which elevates and supinates the humerus — decreased in size, whereas musculus coracobrachialis caudalis — which retracts and pronates the humerus — increased. Lambrecht considered these differences to be indicative of better flight capabilities of stem group <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family" reg="Phalacrocoracidae">Phalacrocoracidae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, and, without further explanation, attributed the poorer flight capabilities of the crown group taxa to their foraging technique. The differences in the course of the linea intermuscularis and the size and shape of the crista bicipitalis are likely to be functionally interdependent. In extant <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family" reg="Phalacrocoracidae">Phalacrocoracidae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, a correlation exists between diving depth and flight performance (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B50">Watanabe et al. 2011</xref>), so that stem group <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family" reg="Phalacrocoracidae">Phalacrocoracidae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> may have been foraging in shallower waters than most crown group taxa.</p>

<title>Avian piscivory and general aspects of the avifauna of the Hammerschmiede clay pit</title>
<p>An outstanding feature of the Hammerschmiede avifauna is the diversity of its piscivorous birds, which is documented by the coexistence of at least two cormorant species, a darter, and a loon. This testifies to a high productivity of the river system of the Hammerschmiede site, which must have provided ample prey for piscivorous birds. The unusual morphology of the tarsometatarsus of the new accipitrid taxon <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Mioaetus">Mioaetus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, which shows a remote resemblance to the corresponding bone of the Osprey (<tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Pandion">Pandion</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="haliaetus">haliaetus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>) in the plantar deflection of the trochleae metatarsorum II et IV, possibly also suggests piscivorous habits of this taxon.</p>
<p>By applying a taphonomic analysis (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">Böhme 2010</xref>), it was recently hypothesized (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B36">Lechner and Böhme 2025</xref>) that the majority of the fish remains are derived from predatory accumulations. This is especially pronounced in certain layers of HAM 4, which are enriched in micro- to millimeter-sized phosphatic concretions, interpreted as bird guano, together with a plethora of fish debris. It was estimated that one metric ton of these sediments contains 1.6 million fragments of mostly juvenile fishes (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B36">Lechner and Böhme 2025</xref>). The presently known fish fauna from Hammerschmiede is composed of 13 species, ranging from small-sized gobies and loaches to large pikes and giant salmons, the latter reaching up to 1.3 m in length. The body sizes of the piscivorous birds span weight classes ranging from about 0.7 kg (cf. <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Microcarbo">Microcarbo</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>) to 3.3 kg (<tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Anhinga">Anhinga</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>), suggesting dietary segregation between the birds. Furthermore, five piscivorous mammals (three <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family" reg="Lutridae">Lutridae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, one <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family" reg="Potamotheriidae">Potamotheriidae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, one <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family" reg="Phocidae">Phocidae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B26">Kargopoulos et al. 2025</xref>), at least one piscivorous soft-shell turtle, a snapping turtle, and a giant salamander co-exist in HAM 4, underscoring the high primary productivity and complexity of fish-based food-webs in this river.</p>
<p>The scarcity of remains of the <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="order" reg="Gaviiformes">Gaviiformes</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> conforms to the fact that loons prefer lacustrine or marine environments over fluviatile ones (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B8">Carboneras 1992</xref>). Accordingly, gaviiforms are more common in the geographically close and only slightly older, Middle Miocene (<abbrev xlink:title="European Mammal Neogene">MN</abbrev> 7) lacustrine sediments of the Steinheim Basin, where they are represented by three as yet undescribed species (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B17">Heizmann and Hesse 1995</xref>; GM, pers. obs.; Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F6">6C</xref>). The Steinheim avifauna also features numerous anseriform birds, whereas other taxa of aquatic birds known from the Steinheim Basin, such as the <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family" reg="Podicipedidae">Podicipedidae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family" reg="Palaelodidae">Palaelodidae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, and <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family" reg="Sulidae">Sulidae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B17">Heizmann and Hesse 1995</xref>), have as yet not been found in the Hammerschmiede clay pit. Cormorants and darters, by contrast, are unknown from the Steinheim avifauna.</p>
<p>The avifauna from the Hammerschmiede clay pit includes several taxa that have not been reported from other Miocene localities and that exhibit distinctive morphologies, including the anseriform <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Allgoviachen">Allgoviachen</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B44">Mayr et al. 2023</xref>), a large indeterminate crane (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B43">Mayr et al. 2020b</xref>), and the new cormorant and hawk species described in the present study. This may reflect the fact that early Late Miocene avifaunas of Europe are understudied, but it may also be due to the particular, fluviatile, palaeoenvironment of the Hammerschmiede clay pit. Future excavations and ongoing studies of the material already collected will certainly shed more light on this comparatively poorly known episode of avian evolution.</p>
